I'd read about this excitotoxicity before. I think Ivor Cummins also had someone on saying it was caused by sars-cov2. So at least a few researchers are convinced this is an essential problem of acute covid. They say putting someone on oxygen then exacerbates the problem. Early treatment prevents people from entering the cascade.
